Thank God For Bad Ideas

What would I have to talk about today if it weren't for the Roanoke City Council talking about building two football stadiums at the city High Schools instead of building something the city can actually use?

The newest idea the council has come up with is scrapping the Victory Stadium renovation and going for two football stadiums. The plan would cost 8.5 million dollars. This is like choosing one bad idea over another.

I hate the idea of renovating a run down stadium that is in a flood plain. But at least that plan would be something the majority of the city could enjoy...That is if the city could bring in some musical acts and other entertainment.

The high school football fields would sit dormant in the summer time. They would be used by a small group of parents and football players while the 20 to 35 age group sat at home wishing they had something fun to do.

By the way, people are already complaining. Name another city in this country that would stop a stadium from being built just because a couple dozen people in the community would be bothered by the lights and sounds of football games.

Hey Roanoke City Council, build a multi-use facility that would host high school football, festivals, and concerts we can only dream of, and I promise most of the city would be happy. Then again the few people that do hate the idea would probably convince you to change your collective mind after three walls are standing.

The main reason the City stopped building the stadium is that it ran out of money. ya see when they were clearing that area a lot of stuff was there that shouldn't be and the city paid big bucks for clean up and fines from the EPA.

Look at the local leaders and how dumb they are.... now, never be surprised when local governments do stupid things.

Does anyone else think Roanoke County Administrator looks like C3PO?

I like the original idea of building a multi-purpose stadium for concerts, festivals, etc. What I would like to see is sell Victory Stadium/land to Carillon, let them build something else and create more jobs. Build each high school their own stadium and then build an amphitheater towards the Explore Park and showcase the Blue Ridge Mountains. People will travel for concerts and concertgoers will fill our hotel beds and restaurant chairs. In Roanoke, we average $1 million in sales from all of our hospitality outlets per day; think of how much more that can be. Roanoke City Council is pathetic; they just want to build another museum where nobody will visit. Roanoke likes to live in the past, lets move toward the future.

I’m with ya Smelly Kat!

Here's the thing: no matter what happens on Reserve Avenue, the land is pretty much going to have to be used for some kind of public use (like a stadium) because it was donated for the railroad with that understanding.

Orange Avenue was a horrible location for anything like this; the land there would be much more valuable in terms of tax income for the city if it were developed for businesses. All a stadium there would do would make a traffic nightmare worse.

People may be upset about high school stadiums, but I grew up next door to one and it wasn't that bad. The bigger issue is... if Roanoke ever has to build another high school... there's no way THREE teams could share the one stadium. That's something I don't think anyone has thought about.

But with all that said, I really don't care what they do. I just hope they DO SOMETHING.

I graduated from Patrick Henry High School in the 'noke about three and half years ago. I went to two footballs games in that time. The main reason for that was that I didn't drive for most of that time, nor did my friends, and my mom had better things to do (like o paying the bills) than to trolley kids around.

If we had had a football stadium at PH I could've gone to everyone b/c the H.S. was in walking distance of my home.

Each schools needs their respective stadiums because it would A) Foster more school pride, there was always something demoralizing about sharing a stadium and B) Make it more accessible to the students who would require it's use.

As for where to have concerts? The Civic Center is a failure in this regard, they demolished a neighborhood to build it too-pity huh? I think an open air amplitheater would be the best solution.

It seems to me you are more concerned with where your concerts are going to be than what's best for the schools, the kids, and venue selections in the 'noke.

On the same note, Victory Stadium is closer to many people houses (within walking distance)....if they moved it others would be in the situation as you? You point has holes dude

Every Stadium Amphitheater SUCKS, unless it has Jimmy Buffett on stage. So if we poured a ton of money in a stadium and even if Jimmy came and played once a year (which is doubtful) The stadium would still SUCK for the other 364 days out of the year. That is to much suckie suckie for the money money

The City should build small statiums at both schools, and build a multi use stadium off of Orange Ave.
As for the City running out of money, that simply is not true. There pockets are endless. A good example of that is that they are in the process of building 15-20 million dollars worth of fire stations with no actual data that they are needed, and the firefighters are the only ones fighting against. There was no studys for alternitives to solving these problems.
As for traffic, there is only traffic problems during commuter times. There will be traffic back ups anywhere you hold events that attract large numbers of people. Example: go to a Nascar race.

Greg Roberts has the solution for Victory Stadium, take a big bull dozer and push it into the river.
