It's All Out

Finally someone has broken the story we've all been hearing and talking about for a week. First of all let me say thank God Marc Lemarre is alive. Like I said before I worked with him and was praying the rumors that he was dead were not true.

Today the whole story unraveled. Channel 10 announced first that Marc was alive, but it did not give any information about his condition.

Now on the eleven-o-clock news Channel 10 is still running that story while WDBJ7 has a lot more details. The rumors that Marc was on Heroin seem to be true. Channel 7 is reporting that there has been an arrest in the case. It seems that Marc overdosed and was found in a tub of cold water, not breathing, and without a pulse. An Ohio man has been arrested and charged with providing the heroin.

He was revived but so far where he is, and his condition have not been released.

I hope Marc comes out of this all OK...But I'm worried there could be some problems if his heart stopped for some time.

Is heroine that popular in the Roanoke Valley? What are the authorities doing to deminish this terrible drug in our area? Maybe, the dealers will be exposed with all this media coverage. I really like Marc and hope he is going to pull through this and get help.

Smelly Kat ...

You need to step up your website promotion ... I see you haven't had any hits from the continent of Africa this year. Step it up!

On topic ... I like Mark a lot and I hope he can pull through this whole thing.

It sucks for channel 10 that they are obviously very close to this story and it would seem that they would have an exclusive, but you have to watch 7 to get the whole story.

Heroin in Roanoke is news to me. I think that is the biggest story here and I hope channel 10's Crime Tracker will keep us informed on this situation.

Is Marcus Vick the dealer? That's what I heard and it does look like it could really be him going by another name!

Is heroin in Roanoke? Who the hell asked that? Does a bear poop in the woods?

Everyone seems to think that Roanoke is so "down home" with no drugs, crime, teenagers giving head in the back of Valley View Mall, etc.

This is so apparent if you follow this thread over at the Roanoke Times.

Someone should run to the news and figure out why they never reported the gang fight 3 weeks ago with a triple shooting ... i know it happened but the news never even touched it .... trying to keep roanoke's image from turning so ugly?

Yes heroine is in Roanoke, it's everywhere!! Just from my graduating class alone (1998-Salem High School)there has been 3 overdoses resulting in death just in the past 2 years. Marc is very lucky and he will be even luckier if there was not any permanent damage done to his brain! I do hope he makes a full recovery, but he will still have to deal with his addictions.

The question now is ... why does Channel 10 feel it's appropriate to point fingers at the other local media for allegedy printing heresy and speculation? No media outlet in town that I have seen has posted ANYTHING but the facts.

For a station that absolutely has the reputation as the "tabloid" news in town, seems like an odd time for them to suddenly discover their alleged moral fiber. Deal with your own crisis and take responsibility ... don't go around pointing fingers at everybody else around you.

I think this is an unfortunate time for Marc, his family and friends in the viewing area, and his co-workers. I really think WDBJ7 was seriously in the wrong to report. It just seems so National Enquirer to me. I don't feel it was done in the interest of spreading news I feel that it was for ratings and other self-gain. Its not headline news when anyone else overdoses so why should his name be smeared all over the state. Now thanks to the news of his personal issues which can be effictevly treated if nothing is medically holding him back he will be lucky to work ever again in a career he appeared to love.

Regarding the Marc Lamarre overdose...Channel 10 could have...

...encouraged a family rep to come forward sooner.

...corroborated the story with direct sources/eyewitnesses.

... released their own detailed statement sooner...instead of issuing a “no comment”.

... reported the story once it was broken by WDBJ7 and Roanoke Times.

...convened an “ethics panel” February 2nd (or sooner) instead of on February 10th.

Note the level and depth of coverage the story has received since Channel 10 allegedly convened that ethics panel. Could it be that the ethics panel told them they’d better start telling the story or risk further damaging their reputation and credibility?

Why did Channel 10 take so long to report the story? Could have been, as Kathy Mohn has asserted on air, that they were just being really careful legally. Could have been that they hoped the story would go away.

This is from a Saturday report in the Richmond Times-Dispatch...which is ironically also owned by Media General...the conglomerate that also owns WSLS.

“Thursday night, hours after Mohn tried to publicly dispel rumors that Lamarre had died, rival station WDBJ Channel 7 broke the news of his overdose. The station aired a report in which Phillips confirmed that his client stands accused in connection with Lamarre's near-fatal experience.

The Roanoke Times followed the report with a story on its front page yesterday, and WSLS aired a report on the overdose during its 6 p.m. broadcast.

After the news report last night, Mohn said in a statement, which also is on the WSLS Web site:

"You need to know that WSLS NewsChannel 10 was legally unable to talk about Marc's situation until after we found out about the official federal criminal complaint.
"That was the first time we were legally allowed to discuss the situation."”

But was it the first time your news department was allowed to COVER the story. This statement is very misleading. Are you going to require a federal criminal complaint to be made public before you’ll cover other stories? What about the double homicide on Friday in Northeast Roanoke. You reported a five year old discovered the body of his murdered mother. That wasn’t found in a federal criminal complaint. It wasn’t in the police report. It was reported by a “source” and you ran it as news. Why couldn’t you find sources to tell the Marc Lamarre story that was right under your nose?

Channel 10 did report the facts! When channel 7 ran the story that the "unidentified" victim of a heroin over dose was Marc they jumped the gun. Yes, it was kind of obvious BUT it was not confirmed at the time channel 7 broke the story. They jumped the gun. They look like heroes because they were right, but would have had some major egg on their face if they had been wrong. As soon as the dealer's lawyer confirmed that the victim was mark then channel 10 ran the story based on fact. I heard (boy haven't we heard that a lot this past week) that WFIR ran the story of the "unidentified" victim, but did not link "him" to Marc. Kudos to both channel 10 and WFIR... the report on fact and not on speculation!

Channel 10 was put in a rough situation last week and I think they handed it great. They handled it by the book!

You're crazy if you think Channel 7 jumped the gun. They didn't come out until they heard from the lawyer of the accused. The "unidentified victim" was spoken about as such.

The fact is that Channel 10 reporters had access to sides of this story that nobody else did. I believe that management at the station did not let their reporters cover the story.

As for comments about how this is a personal problem for Marc to go through...that is obviously not true based on how much people care about it. That's what makes a news story.

Bottom line is this story should have been, and could have been broken by channel 10. WDBJ 7 worked it's ass off to get this story on the air...while Channel 10 tried it's damndest to cover it up.

John Carlin said it himself on the air "We simply could not IGNORE the rumors anymore"

It's comical...

I'm a former employee of Newschannel 10. I've worked personally with Marc. My oldest son was often entertained by Marc while I was finishing up for the day and Marc loved to let him see the weather computers and play infront of the green screen.

It saddens me that this story has consumed the area (and other parts of the country).

I've been gone for 3 years almost but my phone has been ringing off the hook from people I haven't heard from in YEARS wanting to know what's going on. By Wednesday, I had had enough. It was consuming so much of my time and energy.

I went to get my hair cut last week and Marc and I happened to get our hair cut by the same person. By the time I left I had heard that he was brain dead and intubated. That night on the news he made a personal statement. Hard to do that with a tube down your throat.

What I don't understand is why people feel the need to talk about things that they don't have all the facts on (and I'm not talking about the media here, folks.)

WDBJ reported on the facts. But they also weren't in the situation that SLS was. And I can guaruntee you that this was turned over to the ethics committee the minute it happened. I know SLS and Media General well enough to know that no time was wasted in determining how to handle this.

Put yourself in the shoes of WSLS. How do you handle a situation like that? It's one of your own, but at the same time, they are an employer. I'm not in their shoes and don't know how I would've handled it.

What are we teaching our kids? Do they just see us gossiping or have we sat them down and shown them the dangers of drugs and how your life can be gone in a minute?

I don't shelter my kids however I try to be careful with what they are exposed to. My 9 year old watched the coverage on Friday and asked me what happened to Marc, the cool guy that always let him play weatherman.

He learned about Heroin and how it affects you. Instead of talking with him about the gossip, we talked about how it could affect your life.

Let's face it. If this were any other person than Marc Lamarre this probably wouldn't have made the news at all.

The fact of the matter remains is that people make mistakes. Some bigger than others. What's most important here is that he's alive and he's getting help.

The only thing we all should be doing now is saying a prayer that he come out of this the best that he can instead of continually talking about it. It's unfortunate. It's sad. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

I know gossip gets the best of us. But let it go. Leave the man alone. I think he's been through enough already.

By their own admission, WSLS convened the ethics commission finally on Friday...some 8 days after the incident happened. That, to me, is telling.

Notice how the story has pretty much gone away now that the facts are out. I'm a big believer in karma...and the fact of the matter is that WSLS has been much more damaged by the gossip than the actual story on Marc Lamarre.

If they had the courage to tell their story sooner...they would not be in this position.

My hunch is that Mark Lamarre will make a comeback. He's an extremely talented and likeable guy who apparently also had some personal issues. Immensely popular with children and many others. Lets just be glad he survived and that he is getting the help he needs. Pray for this guy, people make mistakes. Lets hope we see this guy again.

I am a friend of Marc's, the one that was seen hugging him on WDBJ. He is a strong, wonderful man that will bounce back and do well with his life. Hopefully one day he will come back to this area for a visit and I hope that he will be greeted with open arms..

Seems like Jamey Singleton was fired earlier this evening by his TV station. Something about an innapropriate photo being sent out via e-mail, and his violating a morals clause in his contract. Weird to say the least. Just when it seemed he was getting his life together. Sad really.

Wonder what the photo was all about. Did he send out a pic of himself??? Hmmmmmm. Not too much info available at this early stage. Just happened a few hours ago. Maybe more news and a real explanation in the morning. Poor Jamey :-(

It has been one year today since Marc's overdose. He is now in Maine, with a nice apartment and a good job. No, he is not on the air as a weatherman. But it is a job that he loves and he is making good money. His health is not back to 100% yet, but he is working hard on it and feeling better all the time. Marc is clean and is going to stay that way. I spoke with him 3 days ago and still considers Roanoke a wonderful place to live!
